This letter first appeared on August 30, 2008 on the blog of the Denver Post:

Re: "Baby steps in targeting chemicals in toys," Aug. 24 news story.

Your article on the alleged risks of chemicals in toys (and other products) was alarmist and unscientific. "Growing concerns" among advocates and parents may spur private retailers to modify their product lines, but such vague feelings should not form the basis of government bans. In fact, there is no evidence that phthalates in toys cause reproductive problems in either gender, nor can anyone point to health effects from bisphenol-A in bottles.

The "expert" said, "Based on evidence we have, a stronger approach is needed." What evidence? Overall health among children, including declining cancer rates, is better than ever.

In the risk-averse European Union, scientists pondered the safety of phthalates in toys for six years, and just as the conclusion of their exhaustive study was released -- confirming that the chemicals are safe -- the EU political commission banned the chemicals anyway.

If the U.S. adopts this form of "science," many more safe and useful products will be banned -- with no benefit at all for the health of children, or adults, but at great cost to consumers.
