"People can say what they want about the sweeteners, but this thing has been reviewed and reviewed and reviewed," said Ruth Kava, director of nutrition at the American Council on Science and Health, a consumer education consortium.

Scientists affiliated with the council recently released a publication affirming that the five sugar substitutes approved for sale in the United States pose no health risk...

"They are so sweet that you use such small amounts of them," Kava said. "It's hard to imagine they could have much of an effect on people."
