A survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics indicates that more than 40% of U.S. adults who have depression are also smokers. By contrast, the overall national smoking rate is around 20%.

We have long known that smoking and depression are highly correlated, says Dr. Whelan. People who are depressed often turn to cigarettes, and it can be much harder to help them quit smoking. We mentioned this phenomenon in our publication Cigarettes: What the Warning Label Doesn t Tell You.
