“Over the past decade, on a number of issues, BP failed to defend sound science, presumably because they wanted to be in the good graces of potential critics. The goodwill that they attempted to buy by failing to stand up to junk-science activists back then, amounted to a bill of goods.” The lesson, says Stier, “Companies shouldn’t labor under the false pretense that they can placate critics. When you screw up, as BP did here, you’re going to be called on it regardless of your efforts to appease potential critics.”
