Canada declares BPA 'toxic'

With the European Union regulators recently reaffirming the safety of bisphenol A, ACSH friend Jon Entine has a long (but breezy and well-written!) piece in the Huffington Post asking, “at what point will the science prevail?”

Apparently not quite yet — as yesterday Canada became the first jurisdiction in the world to declare that the widely-used chemical is toxic. The move will allow the government to ban the use of BPA in specific products through regulation, rather than legislation.

“We continue to be amazed at the dissonance between the scientific evidence and the activist pressure, which — thanks to the precautionary principle — allows governments to ban safe and useful products out of ‘consumer concern’ instead of science,” says Dr. Whelan.
