Re: "California Initiates Blackouts to Save Power" (news story, Jan. 18):
Isn't it ironic that, as the most technologically advanced state in the most technologically advanced nation slouches towards darkness, no one dares speak of the clear solution to our looming energy crisis: nuclear power?
Efficient, environmentally-friendly, and domestically-produced, nuclear power as an energy source has been used for three decades in Europe, with only the Chernobyl accident in 1986 as a blemish on its safety record. Why isn't this source being considered, in addition to new drilling for gas and oil, in view of California's plight? The alarmist fears of a few anti-nuclear activists have prevented this issue from becoming part of our country's solution to dependence on foreign oil. It's time for science to speak out against superstition.
