All future Mondays in the City of Angels are going to be officially meatless, the Los Angeles City Council has decided by a 12-0 vote, making it the biggest city in the nation to embrace the Meatless Mondays campaign, an initiative associated with John Hopkins University s public health school.

"While this is a symbolic gesture, it is asking people to think about the food choices they make, said Councilwoman Jan Perry. Eating less meat can reverse some of our nation's most common illnesses.

Where s the evidence that eating meat contributes to our nation s most common illnesses ? asks ACSH s Dr. Elizabeth Whelan, The answer: There is no such evidence. But of course the proponents of this ridiculous effort will then trot out the it s better for the environment argument, and all rational thought will cease. Furthermore, there s also no evidence that a vegetarian diet will improve anyone s health.

And there s no evidence that eating meat as part of a balanced diet plays any role in any adverse health outcome, agrees ACSH s Dr. Gilbert Ross.
