Every Picture Tells a Story: COVID-19's Summer of Fears

By Chuck Dinerstein, MD, MBA — Aug 08, 2021
Roughly 70% of Americans have gotten or plan to get vaccinated – a percentage that has not changed since June. The public remains divided between those that fear the virus and its consequences and those who fear the vaccination.

Here are the demographics of disparity - separating the "fearful" from the "fearless."

Much has been written about the vaccination outreach into our Black churches and clergy, but that is a third less than the 24% of the unvaccinated White Evangelicals. Perhaps our vaccination outreach should visit their churches and clergy too.

It’s about tradeoffs -  Is the treatment worse than the disease?

"Overall, nearly two-thirds of adults are worried the new variants of the coronavirus will lead to a worsening of the pandemic in the U.S., including 26% who are “very worried.” A majority are also worried that new variants will lead to a worsening of the pandemic in their local area. Fewer are worried they will personally get sick from a new variant of the coronavirus.”

The public perceives the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) as more effective than the only approved vector vaccine (J&J), an opinion unchanged since early spring. But among the unvaccinated many fear the treatment far more than the disease.
