Everybody likes to consider themselves open-minded. (Few, if any, people would proudly claim, "Nah, I'm closed-minded.") Like kindness and humility, open-mindedness is widely perceived as a good character trait.

As the holiday season ends, as it inevitably will, it will become the season of self-congratulatory award ceremonies.

Americans don't agree on much these days. But one thing upon which we do agree is that something is deeply broken in our society.
