Video: Calcium Intake — Less Is More

By Ana-Marija Dolaskie — Mar 25, 2016
Many organs in our bodies depend on calcium to function, so it's important we get enough of it. And most of us already do. So when it comes to calcium supplements, some researchers say, less is more.

Our nerves, muscles, veins, and arteries all depend on calcium to function. If we don't get enough calcium in our diet, our bodies will take some from our bones — that's a no-no. So it's important we get enough, and most of us already do so from our daily food consumption.

So is there such a think as too much calcium? Some researchers say, yes. When it comes to calcium intake, experts say don't over do it. Some studies have shown the supplement to be harmful in patients who have high risk factors of cardiovascular events and stroke. For the rest of us, eating a balanced diet, spending time outdoors, and hitting the gym can keep our bones in check.
