In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, the senators called on the Agriculture and Justice departments to "mount vigorous defenses against lawsuits that seek to upend science-based regulatory decisions." They also argued that previous anti-GM food legislation has "circumvent[ed] sound science and the intent of Congress" in order to "slow regulatory decisions and prevent commercialization in the future."

ACSH's Dr. Elizabeth Whelan said, "We applaud the efforts of Senators Chambliss and Lincoln to stand up for sound science — in stark contrast to the politically-motivated efforts to impede biotech progress communicated to Sec. Vilsack last month by other members of the legislative branch."
