Exercise harder, not longer?

Harder exercise is better than longer exercise when it comes to preventing metabolic syndrome, Danish researchers reported in a new study published in BMJ Open.

Dr. Eva Prescott and colleagues from Bispebjerg University in Copenhagen examined data on some 14,000 individuals and found that brisk walking cut one s chance of developing metabolic syndrome in half over a 10-year period. But leisurely walking, even for an hour a day or more, had no preventative effects, the researchers found.

But ACSH s Dr. Ruth Kava says the study is flawed and disappointing. It s certainly no more than an elaborate pilot study, she says. Self-reporting is a big issue, especially with respect to exercise intensity. It should be relatively straightforward to design an intervention study to further examine this issue in a better-controlled way.
