Last month, ACSH s Dr. Ruth Kava wrote an
op-ed for the
San Diego Union Tribuneon the dangers of approving California s Proposition 37, which would mandate the labeling of foods containing genetically engineered ingredients. Now another
editorial in the
Los Angeles Times echoes the same sentiments, arguing that GE products should not be labeled since they haven t been shown to cause harm. In addition, the author also argues that enforcing such a labeling mandate would largely occur through lawsuits brought by members of the public who suspect grocers of selling unlabeled food, a messy and potentially expensive way to bring about compliance.
What s needed, the editorial continues, is a consistent, rational food policy, not a piecemeal approach based on individual groups pet concerns. We couldn t agree more.
