A ban too far? Agreed.

A (qualified) shout-out to The New York Times editorial page. ("Is this June 1st or April 1st?" ACSH's Dr. Gilbert Ross wanted to know.) A (qualified) shout-out to The New York Times editorial page. ("Is this June 1st or April 1st?" ACSH's Dr. Gilbert Ross wanted to know.) When we opened the paper today, we were astonished to discover that that the Times editorial writers actually echo our distaste for Mayor Bloomberg's latest hijinks. "A Ban Too Far," is how the editorial describes the New York City Mayor's proposal to ban the sale of sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces.

While we can't unreservedly applaud this Times editorial (it does, after all, praise Bloomberg's scientifically unfounded prohibition of trans fats in restaurants), we agree with its general thrust. "Promoting healthy lifestyles is important," notes the Times. "But too much nannying with a ban might well cause people to tune out."
