Recognized for her roles in such popular movies as Almost Famous and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, actress Kate Hudson is now better known around the mommy blogosphere for committing what is perceived to be the cardinal sin of pregnancy: imbibing a glass of wine. While dining with her boyfriend and U2’s Bono and The Edge in Argentina, a fotog captured Ms. Hudson mid-sip on a tasty Malbec, and now some moms are relegating her to the lowest rung of the “healthy” pregnancy totem pole. But not so fast! As we’ve covered in Dispatch time and again, numerous studies have shown that light drinking during pregnancy (no more than two drinks once or twice weekly) is not linked to adverse health effects in either the mom or her baby. In fact, a study last year demonstrated that women who were light to moderate drinkers early in pregnancy were more likely to raise children with “more positive” behaviors.

“Although that’s just one study, of course, the fact is that the ‘anti-alcohol in pregnancy’ pendulum has swung too far to the abstinence-only side for a while now. I believe the evidence is clear that an occasional drink is OK for moms-to-be,” said ACSH's Dr. Gilbert Ross.

So unlike others, who have condemned Ms. Hudson for her behavior — with no scientific basis — we here at ACSH jointly raise our glasses to her, and wish her a safe pregnancy and a healthy baby.
